What Year Were Hammocks Invented?

The hammock is just as old as it is useful. It is a device that has been around for centuries and has served many cultures well.

Though drawings in caves with nets that could be perceived as hammocks date back to 8,000 B.C., it is commonly accepted that hammocks have been around since 2,000 B.C. Hammocks originated in Mezzo-America (Central and South America, Caribbean) as a tool used by indigenous tribes like the Maya and Inca. When Christopher Columbus arrived in Cuba around the end of the 15th century, he found people sleeping in nets suspended between the walls of their houses. As European explorers spent more time in the Caribbean and Latin America, they found more styles of hammocks—variations on a theme. The Mayans of the Yucatan peninsula wove sisal slings, while deeper in the jungles they found hanging beds between trees—an environmental adaptation inspired by the human survival instinct. Family Hammocking: A Look at the La Siesta Joki in the Wild

Hammocking is a way of life. In some way, it’s an expression of personal values — a statement of belief.

I believe in the importance of relationship and also of individuality. In family bonding alongside introspective reflection. I believe in the critical importance of physical and mental rest, even though our world of deadlines, multitasking, and power lunches struggles to quantify – and therefore value – its treasured effects. And above all, I value finding and doing what works – what brings personal happiness, regardless of societal norms or expectations.
