4 Reasons You Should Camp With a Hammock

According to a poll from our friends at REI, a comfy hammock is the number 1 must-have piece of gear for every backpacking trip.

To hammock-ers around the world, this fact is self-evident.

But for those who haven’t yet converted to the Church of the Swaying Hammock, we want to make it clear why backpackers are in love with their hammocks. So, we worked with our partners at The Dyrt to put together this list of 4 reasons you should pack a hammock next time you go camping.
1. Add another dimension to your campsite
There’s something uniquely exciting about sitting several feet off the ground enveloped in a strip of fabric. You aren’t on a log, you aren’t on a tiny folding camp chair, and you’re not crammed into a cross-legged position in your tent. Hammocks let you experience your campsite in a completely different way from other camp seating options.
2. Don’t settle for a picnic bench weekend
Sitting on a picnic bench all weekend gets old fast. Give yourself another option by bringing your hammock with you. You can change where it’s set up and switch off between picnic bench and hammock, making your camping getaway all the more enjoyable.
3. Relaxing moments are even more relaxing in a hammock
When you’re camping and the temperature is just right, the sun’s out, and there’s a light breeze… it doesn’t get much better. Unless you have a hammock, then it does get better. Enjoying ideal conditions from a hammock means your whole body can relax, allowing you to really soak in your environment. And, let’s face it, perfect conditions are few and far between. However, whether conditions are ideal of poor, hammocks set you up for maximum relaxation.
4. Surrender to the flow of a hammock
There’s a carefree je ne sais quoi that goes along with rocking in the breeze, book in hand, hearing leaves rustle overhead. For a brief moment, you feel like another leaf yourself, lost in nature (our, more accurately, found). Unlike other seating options, hammocks are not rigid. They move and flow, both with your movements and with those of the world around you. Letting go of the control that comes with rigid seating can help you relax even more than you would otherwise.

So, next time you go camping, consider bringing a hammock. You won’t regret it.
